I have just seen this film and highly recommend it. I've never seen a whole Dickens novel captured so well on film, a medium which necessitates a great deal of editing. Yet you never feel rushed or confused. The film is full of life, there is plenty to laugh at and a timely reminder that wickedness has always been with us. Nicholas and Kate Nickleby, however, make role models that one hardly ever sees on film these days: good, honorable, kind and loyal.
An interesting costume detail: although the film is set in the 1850s the characters Nicholas Nickleby and Madeline Bray wear costumes from an earlier generation, to suggest that they are wearing family hand-me-downs.
The trailer can be viewed on the official website.

I love that film. There's some lovely music in it too.

I'm so glad you dropped by... I've been wanting to come visit, and now I'm SO glad I did. I need to print off some of your posts!
I love period pieces. Yes, I've enjoyed the Poirot series, as usual. The sets and costumes are as enjoyable as the mystery itself! I'm SO jealous that the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency is showing over there... how long before we get it? Too long, if ever, I fear.
It is hot, hot, HOT here... approaching 100 for days on end. This morning I'm up early and it's actually nice on the porch, so I'm off for a cup of coffee. I can smell the fresh air - I was finally able to open the back door for awhile to freshen up the house. It's SO nice. But it won't be long until I will be forced to close it again!
Hope you are having a nice summer. It's so good to catch up with you today.

Susan - yes the music helped to make the film special!
Jennifer - Where would we ladies be without our period pieces? I think No 1 Ladies Detective Agency is (or will be) shown on HBO.
It is very hot in England at the moment too, but not as hot as 100 degrees, about 86 but I think you live much further south than we do. I hope you manage to keep your house cool somehow. I do dislike going to bed and feeling too hot to sleep.
